Lovie Smith has certainly had his problems to deal with this season.  No offensive line, a poor running game, costly interceptions, bad defense, and lots and lots of penalties.  These issues have definitely contributed to the lack of success this year.

When looking at Lovie Smith, what do you see?  Sure, you see a blank stare filled with ineptness, but what’s really missing?  Smith is missing the one aspect that should be required among all Chicago Coaches: Facial Hair!

Mike Ditka and Phil Jackson proudly wore facial hair while experiencing great success in Chicago.  White Sox World Series Championship manager Ozzie Guillen and Blackhawks Coach Joel Quenneville apparently got the memo and wears facial hair while on the bench.  Clearly, Quenneville’s mustache is an important factor in the Blackhawks dominance this season.  They should easily be the next Chicago team to bring home a title, thanks to the mustache of course.

It doesn’t seem like much, but apparently a mustache and facial hair play a critical role in success among Chicago coaches.  That being said, it is clear that if the Bears are to win a championship any time soon, they need to make a move for a coach who sports a mustache.  Doesn’t Bill Cowher have a stache?

Eagles – 24

Bears – 20

The Bears failed to close out a winnable game last night at home against the Eagles.  Ahead 20-17 late in the game, the Bears defense allowed the Eagles to march down the field for a go ahead touchdown drive.  With the offense given one final chance to lead the Bears to a win, a second down throw by Jay Cutler was tipped by a defender and picked out of the air by another Eagle for his only interception of the game.

The Best thing about Cutler’s performance last night was that he only threw one interception.  Other than that, he was awful.  He finished 24/43, with 171 yards, one touchdown and one interception.  Hidden in the stats however is the fact that Cutler horribly missed three wide open receivers throughout the game.  One of those misses came on what could have been a go ahead touchdown pass to Johnny Knox, who had sped past the defender and into the open field only to see the pass from Cutler sail over his head.  Cutler’s confidence appears to have disappeared.  Hopefully it can return in the near future, especially after some staff changes such as an offensive coordinator change.  With Turner gone next season, Jay would be under his third coordinator in 3 years and it’s a possibility that his development may suffer.

Matt Forte continued to struggle while Kahlil Bell, the recently promoted practice squad player, ran for 81 yards on 4 carries.  Bells first career carry came early in the second quarter and he broke through the line and raced for 72 yards before being tackled deep in Eagle territory.  He continued to run hard in limited action after that and raised questions as to whether Matt Forte is a featured back like previously thought.

The defense gave up 24 points while creating three turnovers.  They allowed the Eagles to take a lead late in the game but redeemed themselves when they got the ball back for one more offensive drive.  Briggs continued his pro bowl level season as he recorded 11 tackles and a sack.  Also, Zack Bowman is developing into quite the ballhawk, recording an interception in his third straight game.  Unfortunately, he is still a below average cornerback and gets beat too much.

Lovie Smith continued to spew his typical optimism after the game and reiterated to the media that there is still plenty of football to play.  Someone needs to tell Lovie that there are only 6 games left and the Bears essentially finished in what turned out to be a pathetic season.  On the bright side, Lovie only has two years left on his contract and Ron Turner is almost certain to be gone after this season.  The Bears need to bring in a competent staff quickly and get this team playing at a high level.  Right now, the current regime is not getting the job done.

Cardinals – 41

Bears – 21

The Bears took the field today in a game that would likely determine what they were all about this year.  Instead of coming out of the gates and making a statement, the Bears defense came out looking unprepared and pathetic.  This scene has become all too familiar for Bears fans this year, as the Bears defense failed to stop the Cardinals offense on their first 6 possessions.  Once again, it appears that Lovie did not have his team ready to play when the game started.

Lovie is proving how ineffective he really is and that he has completely lost his players.  This was never more evident than when Tommie Harris punched a down Cardinal lineman on the fourth play of the game.  Tommie was subsequently ejected and will likely be fined and even suspended.  The Bears should consider suspending him for the rest of the season for his attitude today and his overall play this year.  He is worthless for this Bears team now.

Lovie Smith, like against the Bengals, did not have the defense ready to play.  The Cardinals came out and hit the Bears right in the mouth, scoring easily on the first drive.  The defense gave up first down after first down while the Cardinals league worst running game ran wild.  By halftime, the Cardinals had 21 first downs.  The Bears had 20 first downs in the game in which they had a good offensive performance.

Lovie also failed to call any double coverage on Larry Fitzgerald.  Instead, he left Charles Tillman alone to cover and get dominated by one of the best receivers in the league.  It is mind boggling how the Bears did not double Fitzgerald on even a few plays to try to slow him down.  With Lovie calling the shots on defense this year he needs to be held accountable because this defensive playcalling and execution is awful.  There are no excuses right now.  Lovie simply can’t get the job done as a head coach or defensive coordinator.

The Bears responded quickly after allowing the first touchdown though.  Jay  Cutler drove the Bears down the field and hooked up with Olsen on a beautiful pass in the end zone.  Ron Turner did not call a single run play on that drive and only ran the ball with Forte 5 times in the game.  However, the Bears defense was unable to hold onto the tie as the Cardinals again marched right down the field for an easy score.  The Cardinals continued to score on their next 4 possessions.

The only good thing from today’s game was the success of the passing game.  Cutler finished with a 98.6 rating, 369 yards, 3 touchdowns, and a pick.  Devin Hester and Earl Bennett each had over 90 yards receiving and Greg Olsen found the endzone for all 3 of the Bears touchdowns.  The young group of receivers combined with the talented Jay Cutler continues to improve ever week.  This will be a good group to watch in the upcoming seasons.

The Bears players should be embarrassed after today’s loss and about their recent performances lately.  The Bears have been blown out twice in the last 3 games and have a tough next 3 games ahead including a Thursday night game in San Francisco.  The Bears will only have 3 days off until then and they’ll have to make the trip out west.  Expect the Bears to look tired and unprepared again as they battle the 49ers.  After San Francisco, the Bears return home to face the Eagles and then head to Minnesota for the Vikings.  We could easily see the Bears with a 4-7 record after this stretch unless some big changes happen with the team.

Bears – 30

Browns – 6

After a disappointing loss to the Bengals last week, the Bears bounced back for an easy win against the Browns today.  The Bears defense played well against a pathetic Browns offense, forcing 5 turnovers, blocking an extra point, and returning an interception for a touchdown.  The Bears offense on the other hand proved they shouldn’t be feared by any team in the league.

Although they took the loss, the Browns defense gave the Bears problems in the trenches today.  Cutler was sacked 4 times and rarely had time to make good throws.  The Browns defensive line was consistently getting good pressure against the poor Bears O-Line.  Meanwhile, Cutler was taking an absolute beating and is lucky to have walked off the field alive.

Josh Beekman got the start at left guard over Frank Omiyale today but the offensive line still failed to get a good push against the opposition.  Forte managed to find the endzone twice but was held to just 3.5 yards per carry in the game.  However, he looked a bit quicker today than he had all season long.  Hopefully his explosiveness starts to return as the Bears try to get rolling in the second half of the season. The move to Beekman was long overdue as Omiyale looked pathetic for far too long this season.  This was the right move and

Overall, the Bears offense put on a mediocre performance.  Again, they struggled in the red zone and were forced to settle for field goals early on after taking the ball deep into Browns territory.  Although the team did a better job of protecting the ball in the redzone today, the playcalling and execution inside the 20 was just sad as the Bears scored only two touchdowns on six trips.  Ron Turner is really struggling to call effective plays when the Bears get near the endzone and that is really going to hurt the Bears in the long run this season.

Devin Hester continued to make great strides as a receiver, hauling in 7 catches for 81 yards.  He showed excellent hands and explosiveness as Jay looked towards him often throughout the game.  Hester has clearly emerged as the Bears go-to receiver this season.  His play has improved since the start of the season and it should only get better as the season continues.

On the defensive side, the Bears were in control all game long.  The Browns had success with the run but the Bears were able to contain the running game when necessary while completely shutting down the passing game.  Cleveland’s quarterbacks completed 7 of 20 passes for 74 yards and looked absolutely awful in the process.  Derek Anderson threw two interceptions.  Daniel Manning made a great diving catch on the first interception and Charles Tillman took the second one to the endzone.  Manning also forced and recovered a fumble, one of three fumble recoveries on the day for the Bears.  Daniel has been criticized in his career for his safety play but he can silence the critics with more performances like this.

The Bears were fortunate to get the Browns at home after two straight losses.  Although the Bears offense looked a bit lethargic against a pitiful Browns team, a win is a win and right now the Bears need them.  The team needs to step up their game next week however as the Cardinals come into town with a high powered pass offense.  The Bears secondary better be ready for Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin.

Bengals – 45

Bears – 10

Only a week after a disappointing loss to the Falcons, the Bears returned to action only to show how pathetic of a team they really are.  In a game where nothing went right for the Bears, the Bengals easily jumped out to a 31-0 lead before the Bears even knew what hit them.  With the Bears secondary often out of place and confused, Carson Palmer completed 20 of 24 passes for 233 yards and 5 touchdowns.  Cincinnati scored touchdowns on their first 4 drives and were not even held to a punt until late in the game.  When the Bears finally made a stop and forced a punt, a running into the kicker penalty gave the Bengals a first down.

Cedric Benson ran wild as he looked nothing like he did when playing for the Bears. He racked up 189 yards and a touchdown while Bears defenders could do little to slow him down.  He tore through the Bears’ front 7 like it was nothing.

Again, Cutler failed to protect the ball well.  He threw 3 interceptions and fumbled the ball twice on shotgun snaps.  When your quarterback is playing like that, it’s going to be hard to win a lot of games.  In his defense, it’s tough to make good throws when the line can’t block for you, but Cutler still needs to stop forcing so many throws.

Defensively, this was easily the worst performance of recent memory.  For the second straight game the Bears failed to record a sack.  The lack of pressure up front allowed Palmer to relax in the pocket and pick the secondary apart like they were a high school team.  Zack Bowman and Charles Tillman are really proving they are worthless as starting cornerbacks.  Meanwhile the front seven did little to slow down Benson on his way to an excellent game on the ground.

There really is not one positive aspect that came out of this loss.  Lovie Smith simply failed to have his team ready to play.  The players don’t seem to respond to Lovie anymore.  He is unable to motivate them and the result is a game like we witnessed today.  Aside from the poor offensive line and offensive play calling, Lovie Smith is a huge problem for this team.  Lovie is a good coach, but he isn’t good enough to get the job done in Chicago.  He is consistently getting out-coached while not motivating his players enough to play hard and win.  If this continues for the remainder of the season the Bears need to think about dumping Lovie and bringing in a real head coach with a real defensive scheme as well.  Lovie’s cover 2 can’t get the job done for the Bears.  Too many teams know how to rip it apart while Lovie fails to make the proper adjustments to stop the bleeding.

Falcons – 21

Bears – 14

This loss hurts.  In what may prove to be such a crucial game in the season, the Bears went out and really displayed they are not true contenders this year.  The score certainly looks close as the Bears were in striking distance the entire game, but the team simply made too many mistakes to win tonight.  Most of these mistakes would be unacceptable at the high school level.

How does Orlando Pace, a possible future Hall of Famer, not know the snap count on the most crucial play of the game?  On 4th and 1 late in the 4th quarter with the ball deep in Atlanta territory,  Orlando Pace lunged forward prior to the snap for a crucial false start penalty.  This pushed the Bears back 5 yards and the next play attempt was a failed pass to Desmond Clark.  That penalty was unacceptable.

Other unacceptable penalties included having 12 men on the punt return team.  That 5 yard penalty gave the falcons a first down after the Bears made a good defensive stand.  Penalties like that ruin games for teams and in actuality make a team look more like the Rams than playoff contenders.

Cutler played well enough to keep the Bears in the game through the passing game.  He was picked off twice in the first half, once in the redzone, but finished the game with 2 touchdowns and only those 2 picks.  His poise and playmaking ability on the late 4th quarter drives really kept the Bears alive tonight.  He did all this with almost no offensive line play.

Behind this offensive line, this Bears team is not going anywhere.  Cutler has no time to throw the ball, Forte has no room to run, and did I mention the crucial false start?  Simply put, you can’t be a serious contender with an offensive line this bad, especially with Frank Omiyale starting at left guard.  Omiyale is possibly the worst left guard to ever take a field at any level of football.  He might as well just line up on the sidelines and save himself the wear and tear on his body.  He is absolutely awful out there.  Only the Bears would take some no-name scrub and pay him starting money, which is probably why he is still out there as a starter.  Angelo and company are too stubborn to admit they were wrong about this poor excuse for a guard.

The Bears need to be able to run the ball successfully in order to win games this year and this line can’t get the job done for Forte.  When Forte did have the ball, he couldn’t hold on to it.  Forte had 2 crucial consecutive fumbles on the goal line.  Unfortunately the second fumble was recovered by Atlanta, and the Bears surrendered at least 3 points.  In his post game interview, Forte took accountability and said “It’s my job to hold onto the ball and I didn’t do it.”  It is good to hear that he is willing to own up to his mistakes tonight.

Defensively, this was a mediocre effort.  The defense stopped the run well, Nathan Vasher and Daniel Manning each had interceptions, but other than that the defense put on a poor show.  They recorded no sacks and rarely had any decent pressure on Matt Ryan.

Nick Roach, again filling in at middle linebacker, was out of place on a touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Tony Gonzalez.  As Jim Wascher so perfectly explained it, “Roach had one job, to cover the deep middle.  What does he do?  He goes to the flat.”  Roach has done better than most expected thus far this season filling in at MLB, but this was a horrible time to fall out of position.  It seems as if Lance Briggs was the only player to actually show up tonight.  No surprise there.

The Bears tonight just made too many mistakes.  Superbowl contenders don’t make these mistakes in such high volume during a crucial game that could have playoff implications.  With the Vikings and Saints continuing to roll, the Bears might be fighting for a wild card spot along with the Falcons, who now have the head to head advantage.

Next week the Bears go on the road again to face a tough Cincinnati team.  This game will be a good indication of whether or not the Bears are ready to play real football and not look like a pop warner team instead.

The Chicago Bears have traded their 2010 second round draft pick for Tamba Bay defensive tackle Gaines Adams.  Adams, the 20o7 4th overall pick has been quite a disappointment in Tampa.  He totaled 12.5 sacks in his first two years, and has only brought down the QB once so far this season.  Bears fans might best remember him for his pick-6 off Kyle Orton in the 2008 season.

The trade likely strengthens the Bears’ already deep DE position.  However, there were certainly other positions of need for the team.  A cornerback, safety, or defensive tackle should be top priority right now, not an underachieving defensive end.  But, in Adam’s defense, he has freakish athlietic skill and never had good talent around him in Tampa.  With Rod Marinelli as his line coach now, Adams may thrive in the Bears system and become a great replacement for soon to be free agent Adewale Ogunleye.

Although right now it’s unlikely the Bears could have made a good move for any needs, they could have used the 2010 second round pick for that purpose.  This trade just does not make a lot of sense at this time.  The Bears pass rush has been very good this season while other positions are struggling mightily.

Bears – 48

Lions – 24

After snapping what seemed to be an endless losing streak, the Lions entered Soldier Field and left with a dose of reality.  The Bears knew this game should not be taken lightly and they played well until the finish as they improved to 3-1 on the season.

The Bears defense got off to a slow start while allowing rookie Matt Stafford to find easy completions all over the field.  After scoring on their first two possessions, the Bears D looked like it was in for a long day.  Fortunately Jay Cutler and the offense responded well and scored with relative ease to keep the game within reach.

Trailing 7-0, Cutler drove the Bears down the field and tied up the game when he leapt for the endzone and got smashed by defenders as he crossed the goal line.  Many Bears fans may have to look as far back as Jim McMahon to see this type of intensity and desire to score.  That was certainly a site to see.

After the Cutler touchdown jumpstarted the offense, the teams went into the half tied at 21.  However, the Bears decided to make adjustments while the Lions failed to do so.  Johnny Knox opened the second half with a 102 kick off return for a score and the Bears never looked back.  The high powered Detroit offense from the first half disappeared as the same bad Lions we all know re-emerged to score only 3 points in the second half.

With Lance Briggs leading the defense, the Lions struggled to figure out the Bears in the second half.  Briggs was again a menace on the field today, totaling 9 total tackles.  He is well on his way to his 5th Pro Bowl.  As a unit, the Bears defense registered 5 sacks today with Ogunleye recording 2.5.

Matt Forte and the running game finally found success today.  Forte totaled 121 yards on 12 attempts and found the endzone on a 37 yard run.  Hopefully this helps snap the offensive line and Matt Forte out of the funk they have been stuck in this season.  A successful running game will be key to allowing Cutler to open up the game more with the pass.

Jay Cutler quietly had a good performance.  He completed 18 of 28 passes for 141 yards and 2 touchdowns.  The high powered passing game was not needed today as the Bears found success on special teams and with the run.

On the negative side, the Bears pass defense really looked awful in the first half while Matt Stafford looked like Joe Montana.  This will need to improve as the Bears move forward.  The defense has to start playing strong for a complete game, not just late in the games.

Also, the injury bug continues to bite the Bears.  Devin Hester, Johnny Knox, and Adrian Peterson left the game with injuries.  Hopefully these injuries are not too serious.  Hester and Knox are key members in the passing game as well as the return game while Peterson is a stud on special teams.  The good news is that if these are minor injuries, they will have an extra week to heal as the Bears have a bye in week 5.  The Bears need to take the bye week to work on the pass defense and running game.  When they return to action, the Bears face two tough road challenges in Atlanta and Cincinnati.

The bottom line good news though is that the Bears are 3-1 after the first quarter of the season, exceeding the expectations of many.

Bears – 25

Seahawks – 19

A week after beating the defending Superbowl champion Steelers, the Bears looked to get on a roll with a tough match up in Seattle.  After falling behind 13-0 early in the game, the Bears got on track and battled back for a victory.

With the running game struggling again, Jay Cutler stepped up and threw 3 touchdown passes while completing 21 of 27 passes for 247 yards.  He finished with an excellent quarterback rating of 126.4 after overcoming an early interception off a tipped ball.  He saved his best for last however, as Cutler completed 5 of 5 passes for 60 yards and a game winning touchdown to Devin Hester during the 4th quarter.  Seattle got the ball back and had enough time to move the ball into Bears territory, but the Bears defense made the necessary plays to force a turnover on downs, sealing the victory for the Bears.

The Bears got good play from their receivers again today as Devin Hester and Earl Bennett both had productive games.  Hester took a throw from Cutler late in the 4th, broke through two defenders, and sprinted to the end zone for the 36 yard game winning score.  Greg Olsen as well was able to find the end zone to record his first touchdown of the year.  Johnny Knox also found the end zone again.  Hopefully both Knox and Olsen can continue their success throughout the season.

On defense, the Bears still have some room for improvement.  Seneca Wallace was consistently able to find wide open receivers with ease on third downs, allowing for easy conversions.  The Bears pass D needs to step up their game a bit if they want to become a force this season.  In addition, the defense needs to learn to wrap up the ball carriers.  Too many times Bears players were trying to strip the ball as the runner ran right through the tackles for extra yards.  Turnovers are great to have, but sure tackling is a necessity.  On that note, the Bears did force 2 turnovers via a Daniel Manning strip and a Lance Briggs interception.  Manning’s forced fumble came at a crucial point early in the third quarter as the Seahawks looked to expand their 13-7 lead.

Offensively, the line is simply not getting the Job done as they fail to open holes for Forte to run though.  They shouldn’t take all the blame though.  Matt Forte has not looked like the same back as he did in his rookie year.  In the limited times where he found some brief daylight, he seemed sluggish to accelerate and make progress.  Although he struggled to run the ball, he quietly finished with 106 total yards.

After a tough start to the season, the Bears should be very happy to come out 2-1 since things could have been a lot worse at this point.  Next week the Bears take on the Lions in Chicago as they look to improve to 3-1.

Bears – 17

Steelers – 14

This week 2 match up against the Steelers definitely proved to be a good test for the Bears after a disappointing week 1 loss to the Packers.  After a sluggish first quarter on offense, Jay Cutler and the Bears stepped up their game and got the ball moving a bit.  Timely offensive production and solid defense paved the way for an important Bears victory.

Cutler did exactly what he needed to do today to have a nice bounce back game.  He made safe throws to open receivers as he completed 27 of 38 passes for 236 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.  Cutler’s accuracy and his elusiveness in the pocket today were key factors in today’s victory over the Superbowl champs.  The receivers and tight ends struggled with some drops early on, but after the first quarter the hands became reliable.

The Bears defense looked shaky on the Steelers’ opening drive.  Big Ben Roethlisberger led the offense right down the field for a opening drive touchdown as the Bears secondary seemed unable to stop the pass.  However, the D improved greatly as the game went on.  They got pressure on Ben at the right times and forced timely 4th downs.  Certainly two missed field goals by Steelers kicker Jeff Reed in the 4th quarter helped, but overall the Defense kept the Bears in the game all day.

On the offensive side, rookie receiver Johnny Knox showed he is a reliable target in the passing game, hauling in 6 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.  He made some really good grabs and showed he has the hands to make an impact this year.  Cutler will undoubtedly look his way more and more as the season progresses.  This may become an important connection since running the ball again proved difficult for Matt Forte and the offensive line.  The line again failed to open any holes for Forte to run through as he finished up with 29 yards on 13 carries.

Finally, the game was put away by a late Robbie Gould field goal.  After a field goal miss by Jeff Reed, Cutler and the Bears quickly moved into position to setup Gould for a 44 yard attempt.  Surprising no one, Gould drilled the kick, leaving the Steelers with only a few seconds remaining.  On the subsequent kickoff return, the Bears forced a fumble and Craig Steltz dove on the ball, sealing the victory for the Bears.

As always, there is room for improvement.  The offensive line really needs to do a better job opening holes for Forte.  The Bears can’t rely on the passing attack all season long and become one dimensional.  They need to establish an effective running game to make that passing attack even better.  Also, Tommie Harris was again a non-factor.  He made a great play as he burst through the line to record a tackle for loss, bringing his season tackle total to two.  He simply isn’t effective right now and should be on the bench.

The Bears were in need of a win today and they got it.  Starting 0-2 would not have been the end, but it would be a tough hole to climb out of.  Fortunately the Bears played a well rounded game and improved to 1-1 on the year.  The Bears need to carry this momentum into Seattle next week and get rolling with some wins.
